Child-Friendly Dogs

It is suggested that having a dog around while growing up boosts kids’ self-esteem and social skills. It makes them more cooperative as grown-ups. Many dog trainers suggest that it is beneficial to have a dog that considers every human member in a family as its pack member. Many breeds suit the profile of a wonderful family dog, although some are better suited for suburban and rural families than city households. Family dogs such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and Irish Setters are spirited and caring. Breeds such as Pugs, Brussels Griffons, and Bulldogs love their families – especially their laps. It can be very difficult while adding a new puppy or dog to the family to decide which is the best fit. It is important to include everyone in the decision-making process, including the kids while adding a dog to your family. Here are some of the best dog breeds for families and kids:

Labrador Retrievers:

The most popular dog in India for being friendly, patient, great aesthetics, and trainable. The Labrador does very well with kids around in the house as they crave playtime, and exercise. They are not guarding types of dogs but can do a guard dog task with training. If you have a water pool in your house, Labrador is a must for you as water-loving Labrador would get back everything you throw in the water. They need grooming once a week due to their shiny fur.

Golden Retrievers:

One of the most successful, recognizable, and famous breeds due to its versatility, intelligence, and agreeing to personality. For a Golden Retriever, there is no such thing as a stranger. They make friends quickly with kids as well as other dogs and are always ready to play. Two of the biggest qualities that make Golden Retrievers a perfect dog breed to kids are its exemplary patience and zero aggression. They do not need much exercise. All they need is a daily walk or playing with a ball. An average hound weighs between 25-30 kg and could come in dark to a light golden shade. You will find their hair all over the place wherever they go, but shredding becomes less with regular grooming.

Pug:

Well described as ‘A lot of dogs in a small space’, Pug is small but doesn’t require coddling and its mischievous face joggles its way into anyone’s hearts. Pug originated from China’s big palaces. This breed became the top of the city’s favorite pet a few years ago, thanks to an ad campaign series showing its caring and affectionate attitude towards kids. Pugs are comfortable and adaptable to all city situations. Introducing them from early on to different people, noises, frequently visiting neighbors helps in developing a nice temperament. They snore sometimes but you will get used to it. The snore will sound like a melody after a couple of days.

Bulldog:

Bulldogs are perfect for small families with kids. They can adapt to any environment and are happy to spend time with families. Their protective and gentle nature helps in forging strong bonds with kids. Bulldogs are calm, courageous, and friendly with both the kids and other dogs. Bulldogs are flexible so they can live in a small apartment too. Bulldogs won’t beg to be exercised but require regular walks. They are a chill and calm breed that loves to sleep. They too have a flat face like pugs and difficulty in breathing.

Beagle:

If naughtiness is synonymous with cute in your dictionary, then you will adore Beagle. This short-haired dog loves living with a family and enjoys involving in day-to-day things that constitute household routine. Beagle’s size and intelligence make it an excellent family dog. All it needs is tender training since it is naturally curious, has a larger-than-life image, and likes to be vocal. This kid and family-loving breed are also a good fit for small houses and apartments.

Irish Setter:

Being a breed with an outgoing, sweet-natured, and active personality, Irish Setter is a better choice for families with yards. They are known for their stunning appearance and rollicking attitude. Irish Setter is a high-energy breed and enjoys spending time outdoors. Although, families shall choose Irish Setter if they want to teach life lessons to their middle school kids as their lifespans are one of the shortest for largest breeds.

Mutt:

Most people prefer a pure breed but don’t forget this Mix dog breed. They are strong, loyal, and can adapt to extreme Indian weather. They do not fall sick very often as other dog breeds and do not require special grooming. You will not only be taking a homeless puppy off the street but also bag yourself a pet with better immunity. They are lovable, energetic, and most importantly adaptive to any situation.
